- Was started in 1886 and took 8 years and 5 contractors to complete.
- Was originally colored a chocolate but was re-painted red, white and blue in 1977 for the Queen’s Silver Jubilee.
- 70,000 tons of concrete were used to support the bridge.
- 11,000 tons of steel were used for the framing of the towers and walkways.
- Total cost to build the Tower Bridge was £1,184,000, which is about £100 million in today’s money.
- Over the years a number of planes have flown through the bridge (under the walkway). They did not have authorization to do this.
- The bridge is 800 feet long, each tower 213 feet high and there is 200 feet between each tower.
- The Tower Bridge crosses the Thames river.
- Over 40,000 pedestrians cross the bridge every day.
